I took a drive into Boston today to meet up with fellow birders from the Brookline Bird Club at Scarboro Pond. There were at least 20 male and female Wood Ducks competing with the Mallards and Canada Geese for space and food. While the male counterpart of many bird species such as Wood Ducks and Cardinals are flashy in order to attract a mate, the female's colors need to be more muted so they don't stand out when on the nest. I, myself, have always appreciated the understated elegance of the females. Below is a male Wood Duck on the left and a female Wood Duck on the right.
