I headed out to Shaw Road in Fairhaven to see if I could spot the White-fronted Geese that had been posted on the MA ebird rare bird alert. I saw only Canada Geese, a solitary Killdeer, and Mallards. I then remembered that Wilson's Snipe were also reported in the puddle that was roadside on the way to the farm. Never having seen a Snipe before, I carefully scanned the grass around the puddle using binoculars and kept coming back to this lighter-colored spot that seemed a little "different". I trained my Zoom lens on the area and saw a very small bird with a long bill and beautiful brown and white stripes. Merlin confirmed it was a Wilson's Snipe, and it was another lifer for me. What a beautiful little bird although they are fair game to hunt and supposedly taste quite good! This person shoots only with her lens. A little research on the bird says that they have the capability to move the tip of their bill to search for food while the rest stays immobile. That's weird! The Wilson's Snipe is related to the American Woodcock which is doing its mating display right now and which I have also never seen. Another time!
