Headed South today to check on a few screech holes and a possible Great-Horned Owl nest. The resident two rufous morph owls were cooperative and were basking in their holes in the late morning sun. The surprise, though, was this new gray screech owl in a broken tree. Hopefully there will be owlets this spring! Others were also photographing the gray screech owl and, unfortunately, two older men were encroaching on its tree in bad photography fashion They had zoom lenses so there was no need and they should have known better! Of course I couldn't keep quiet and I told them so...
The two Great-Horned Owls that were resting in the pines last time I visited were still there except that the female was finally on the nearby hawk nest likely sitting on eggs. So incredibly high up! These owl sites are in the middle of a city so I am really hoping that rodenticides don't become an issue. It is so sad that we just sent people to the International Space Station, but we can't find a more humane and safe way to exterminate rats and mice.
