Jose and I spotted this beautiful juvenile green heron at the edge of Night Heron Pond at the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Barnstable. We made the drive there over the Sagamore Bridge this past Wednesday to check out striped-bass fishing spots as well as to look for Yellow-crowned Night Heron at the Sanctuary as well as at Hallett's Mill Pond. Both places were beautiful, but no Yellow-crowned. I don't know why I am so obsessed! The Sanctuary had some great trails, and we heard numerous catbirds. We also spotted this juvenile Green Heron with its stunning plumage and sharp, yellow eyes. I loved this first picture due to the background colors on the water and the upright crest on the bird. We were able to observe up close and hidden by the brush. Volunteers at the sanctuary informed us that there was a nest this year with four young of which this juvenile was one and, as of August 15th, all four were good. A place to check for next year!
