It was all about the water droplet! 2/18/2023

I dragged Jose along today as we traveled to Cohasset and Black Rock Beach to seek out the rare King Eider that had been spotted there the day before ( I couldn't seem to find it, but ebird posted that it was there this day with great photos!). Just off of the beach were three Surf Scoters diving in the waves and looking for crustaceans. Their beaks are shaped like this as they need strength to pry these crustaceans off of rocks while they are underwater. All three species of scoters, Surf Scoters, Black Scoters, and White-winged Scoters, have this shaped bill albeit they are all different in color and size and all were seen at Black Rock Beach. So back to the Surf Scoters! I had never seen them so close to shore and amenable to getting their pictures taken so I had a field day and totally forgot about the King Eider. It was so fun watching them dive through the waves and my 500 mm lens was able to get really close shots. When I checked out the photos at home, I was amazed with this particular photo that had a great shot of the Surf Scoter's work-of-art, its bill, but also an amazing water droplet. It is so clear that you can see the convex magnification of the ocean. I thought it was so cool showing bird and macrophotography at the same time.
