Hawk Migration has begun! 9/19/2022

Broad-winged Hawks and Accipiters have begun their migration south and Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks will soon follow. I haven't had any time to visit popular places, such as Mount Watchusett, to watch the migrating "kettles", but I have still been lucky to see many in my own back yard. The attached photo shows a bird that showed up this past week. It was relatively small so I originally thought it was a Cooper's Hawk, but the shorter tail pointed me towards the Buteos. The smaller size and wide, white stripe has me guessing Broad-tailed Hawk so I will stick with that. A beautiful bird!
