It was a beautiful sunny, 60 degree day, and I headed down to Rhode Island with a birding friend to see if any of the Screech Owls were hanging out sunning in their holes. I also wanted to check on the female Great-horned Owl high up in it's nest and her mate in the nearby tree. I was able to see both of the Great-horned Owls a few weeks ago, although the female was sitting pretty low in the nest. Luck was on our side and we were able to see both the rufous morph Screech in the woods and the gray morph next to the road. The other rufous morph, however, was nowhere in sight. The highlight of the visit was seeing the female Great-horned Owl with its new owlet and a bit of a surprise. What I originally thought was a stick in front of the little owlet was actually a pair of a rabbit's hindfeet sticking up! The father usually hunts all through the night and deposits his riches in the nest until they are needed. Hopefully the whole family stays safe and well fed!
